The word moccasin originated in Native American language it meant shoe made of deerskin or soft leather. These shoes are different because their soles and the sides of the shoe are made from one piece material and are sewn together on top with often a panel or vamp being used. Soles of the moccasin are soft and the entire shoe is very flexible. They are extremely comfortable.
Each Indian tribe has their own version of the moccasin. Plains Indians has hard sole moccasins, due to the fact that the terrain around them was mainly rocks and some cactuses. The Eastern tribes used soft soles because the terrain was mainly dirt and grass. Moccasins are very light shoes and are very easy on the feet for casual walking. They are not good for long walks because they tend to be hard on the feet.
Some of the more popular brands of moccasins are Minnetonka, Aztec, Classie N Comfort, Teva and Clarks. If you shop the local shoe stores you will be able to find both hard and soft moccasins. The hard sole moccasins are similar to the flat heeled shoe. If you truly want a pair of true blue moccasins, find the material kind not the leather, the fabric kind with the stitching on the back. Your feet will be comfortable and they are very stylish as well. Great for casual wear. Ladies moccasins are one of the most comfortable types of ladies footwear, great for around-the-house wear.
